Living like a local: New bites for the New Year

Now that we’re past the business of December, with its visits to and from family and lots of parties and gift exchanges, this is a great opportunity to start off the new year by slowing down, having a simple meal and enjoying the nostalgia of some longtime local restaurants.

Kate’s Pancake House has long served Carolina Beach and any visitors. It is located on South Lake Park Boulevard, the main road as you enter Carolina Beach. This adorable building has a pink exterior and a small parking lot. The interior is bright and inviting.

It is a beach theme with good comforting breakfast food. If you like a classic breakfast, you can always get eggs, toast and bacon. I find this to be a mistake. If you are to order eggs, then get them with country ham and a biscuit.

Toast is good, but would you go to France and not order a croissant? Get the biscuit.

Kate’s is not called a pancake house for nothing. When you are here do not be afraid to indulge in a savory treat. For example, the pig-n-blanket, which is sausage rolled into a pancake. For the sweet tooth there is death by chocolate, pretty self-explanatory and amazing. Kate’s followed by a walk on the beach – just across the street – is a great way to spend a morning.

Another great Wilmington spot to relieve your hunger is A Taste of Italy.

This deli is centrally located on South College Road, which is perfect if you are out shopping and need to grab a bite to eat. The sandwiches will fill you up and even leave you with leftovers.

A Taste of Italy opened in Wilmington in the ’90s. I have never met a single soul who did not rave about their food and service experience. They have made-to-order pasta dishes, salads and sandwiches. Another option is to pick up a prepared meal to bake at home.

A Taste of Italy is an easy way to get a meal without having to dine out. The prices are reasonable, which is nice after recovering from December’s spending spree.

My last stop today is Winnie’s Tavern.

Winnie’s has been around for decades. It is downtown, close to the port. This is a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Winnie’s Tavern has a nice cozy ambiance, great table service as well as terrific burgers. As a side note, I always get the garlic aioli with my fries.

As you can see anywhere you are in the Wilmington area you will find quality yet inexpensive food options. Whether you are eating in or taking out, the meals will leave you full and happy.
