The Dream of Retiring at the Coast
There are worse retirement plans than waking up near the water.
Coffee tastes better on a porch. Walks feel less like exercise when there is a breeze coming off the ocean. Friends and family are more likely to visit when your house is in a coastal town. Grandkids remember trips that involve sand, ice cream, and staying up a little too late.
That is the fun part of coastal retirement. It’s not really about the view; it’s about the life the view and area help create. But getting there takes more than picking the right town or finding the right house. The bigger question is whether your financial life is ready to support the next chapter.
Can your retirement income handle the move? Should you sell your current home, keep it, or downsize first? How much can you spend without putting too much pressure on the portfolio? What happens if markets are down early in retirement? How do taxes, Social Security, pensions, investment income, and required withdrawals all fit together?
These are not just spreadsheet questions. They are life questions with dollars signs attached.
Your retirement plan should help you see what is possible before you make the leap. It should show you how your goals fit within different scenarios: strong markets, weak markets, higher spending, a home purchase, or a move closer to family later in life.
Perfect plans do not exist. The goal is a plan with enough flexibility that one surprise does not throw everything off course.
That’s where we can help. We work with families to connect their money to the life they actually want to live. You should be able to see yourself in your plan, not just the numbers. Sometimes that means retiring earlier, sometimes it means waiting, and sometimes it means realizing that a morning cup of coffee or a walk with the ocean breeze in the air is closer than you thought.
The goal is simple: your plan should give you clarity, your money should support your life, and you should have more days where you can look around and think, “This is pretty good.”
